We're two 70+ year-olds (bad knees and all) who are finishing our complete remodel of a 20 year-old 32-foot class A motorhome. [Our new motto is "if two 70 year-old cripples can do it, so can YOU!"] As with the Driscolls, we looked for an RV in good shape. We bought one with a solid chassis, newer tires and brakes, good running engine, upgraded air bags and sway bars, functioning heater and AC, working slide and steps, newer flat screen tv's, etc. We did have minor work done on the steering (bell cranks replaced) to make it tighter (about $900). We found the old color scheme VERY dated and dark - not to our tastes. We are creating a beach-themed interior which is what we love. Replaced old fabrics, valances, and carpeting by: recovering dinette cushions with fabric that fit the theme, purchasing new shades (blindster), and ripping out the old carpeting in favor of VLP plank flooring. BTW, there were over 1000 staples to pull from the carpet. We replaced cabinet hardware and all the switch and outlet covers vs painting. Painted the entire interior, except for the textured ceiling. NOTE: Be sure to SAND the walls and cabinets if you want paint to adhere properly. Replaced sinks and faucets, toilet, mattress, sofa, and installed new lighting. We rebuilt some of the cabinetry to take out dated elements, and customized the kitchen. (I have to say that stick-on bead board wallpaper and backsplash is definitely your friend.) And all this work we have done ourselves - even down to removing and replacing the motorized sleeper sofa (I cannot lie, I had to disassemble both the old and new one to get them out and in with only a 5 year-old grandson to help). Just yesterday I replaced older water heater parts with new to avoid future problems. Still have trim molding to install, touch-up painting, re-carpeting the step well and the cab area - doghouse should prove to be the difficult area there. In December we go for complete repaint and new decals. For that, I'm having to remove all the old decals, ladder, awnings, and light lenses. At the same time replacing new main awning and awning over the slide-out. Total time: about 3 months of work - some full days, some part days - so far. We took 5 weeks off in the summer to travel with grandkids. We head out again for Fall travel in a couple weeks, so have to get cracking again. Total cost of the remodel will be around $22k - about the price we paid for the motorhome itself. $17k for paint, awnings, and decals, $1,400 for the sofa, $580 for the flooring and molding, $500 for sinks, faucets and toilet, $300 for lighting fixtures, $250 for all the blinds, $150 for hardware, $100 for the cab and step well carpeting, and so on. But nowhere near the price, nowadays, of something newer. We are fortunate to have the cash available (sold a business and retired late 2020) so also have no RV payment. If you are going to do this, remember that with a "vintage" unit like ours, there's no resale value anyway. Might as well make it what YOU want to travel in and enjoy for the next 10 years. Thanks for the interview with the Driscolls. It was wonderful to see folks interested in renewing a valuable RV, and being willing to share how it can be done. Greg and Carol Fitzgerald

Love the podcasts. I believe the proper term for what Dave & Jo did to their RV was more "re-decorating" vs. "remodel". We have upgraded our Class A ourselves with converting the dining table to be fold down capable to allow for more floor sleeping space when needed, added spice rack that pulls out from a lower cabinet, added pull out rack for trash can, replaced cabinets to house an electric fireplace that can be used for ambiance or as a heater, replaced a terrible glass door to shower with a Nautilus shower door. At the present time we are remodeling the storage space under the Master queen size bed to allow room for storing a folding cot. These items I would classify as remodeling.

In regards to the no-shows at campsites you wouldn't do that with hotel rooms because you would be charged on your credit card for the full amount of the room if you didn't show up

Thank you for the interview with Dave and Jo. There is never a shortage of frustration when doing a DIY. (Especially when almost every task is your first time doing that task. )

We bought a used class a diesel pusher and we stared with the bedroom refresh, we took the window border off and redid it to lighting it up, it was so dark in the room, we used peel and stick wallpaper, we love it I am thinking on doing the bathroom and possibly doing the living/kitchen in the future
